Food Culture
"To say Singaporeans love to eat is an understatement"
I've been told New York and San Francisco have more to offer in term of variety
, Brussel the best French food and Japan the best quality and service.
But when it comes to a combination of convenience, quality, variety, price and the sheer joy of eating,
Singapore has to be the best bargain on earth. Singaporeans complain about everything, from
the discourteous taxi driver to the censored movies, but not once have I heard anyone complaining
about food.
Perhaps the younger Singaporeans no longer greet one another by saying " Have you eaten yet?"
now that there's no question that everyone's stomach is full.
But isn't it true that whenever we gather, it's almost always involves food, and the most common
question is "Where shall we eat?"(if the meeting is not in a restaurant, that is).
It's usually followed by a long discussion before a decision could be made.
Take a look at this article by Selena Chan orginally
published by the Singapore Internation Foundation that might give you an idea just how much
trouble we, Singaporeans abroad, would go through in order to have a plate of authentic
Char kway Teow. Something that you lucky people back home take for granted!
In Singapore, eating is not just a passion , but an addiction. It is perhaps true to say that many
do in fact "live to eat", at least it seems so, don't you think?
