Dim Sum isn't always as "glamourous" as we imagine it. The photo shows a small dim sum store in small town China.

Dim Sum and dim sum restaurants as we know it is very much a Cantonese idea. Made popular in Hong Kong and Chinsese communities overseas. Most Chinese from the North such as Shanghai and Beijing do know know about the term dim sum let alone dim sum restaurant. While you'll find all sorts of Northern snacks in a dim sum menu such as bao and jiaozi, the way such snacks are made, presented and eatern in their home town is quite different from what you'll find in a dim sum restaurant.
