(Coco)Yam (Taro)

Often called "the potatoes of the tropics". When choosing yam, pick the lighter ones, but not the dried out ones. Frozen yam is also available. Sometime the sap may cause allegic reactions to skin, handle raw peeled yam with gloves.
Yanpi (wrapper)

A Fuzhou, Fujian speciality. Sheets of dried wrappers made of flour are nicely folded and packed into stacks. Spray with water to soften, cut into desired shape and use like a wonton wrap.
Yeast, Dry

Sized like a ping pong ball. Used in the Chinese kitchen.
You Tiow (yeow char kwai, yew char kway)

Chinese fried bread, somewhat crispy and a little salty. Often dipped in coffee or condensed milk, or as an ingredient in various dishes.
